During my time as an accountant CPA working in insolvency I witnessed a common theme amongst business owners. They were of the assumptions that by having a bookkeeper and a taxation accountant their finances were being taken care of.
It was this assumption that resulted in many businesses losing everything as there was nobody who was focussed on:
- what the profit goal for the business was and the plan for how to reach it
- managing the day to day cash flow of the business

See your bookkeeper is responsible for making sure the data in Xero is up to date and accurate whilst your taxation accountant is responsible for your taxation strategy and that you meet your tax obligations.
But everything else is your responsibility as CEO until you reach a stage in your business where it’s time for you to engage a CFO. Until then you are the CFO of your business and these tasks and actions become your responsibility.

- Here we look at the impact you want to make in this world, the products/services you want to sell in your business, your business operations, team and the profit goal you want to make
- We get clear on your revenue strategy and pricing that will help you reach your profit goal but also focuses around the work you want to do, how you want to serve your clients/customers and who you want to work with
- Create your financial roadmap so you have direction and clarity on where your business is going and a financial path for your business that you can use to monitor your business’s performance to make sure you’re moving towards your profit goal
MONTH 3 – TAKE ALIGNED ACTION TO CLOSE THE GAP FROM WHERE YOU ARE NOW TO WHERE YOU WANT TO BE
- Looking at your financial roadmap create an action plan that will take you from where you are now to where you want to be
- Implement financial structure and foundations in your business by setting up your bank accounts and systems and processes so you feel confident around your cash flow position and can track how your business is performing each month
- Understand how to read your profit and loss statement, what you want to be looking at in Xero and the key numbers you want to be reviewing in your business at your weekly Profit Date meetings
MONTH 4 & ONWARDS – UNSTRUCTURED SESSIONS
- These sessions can be about anything that comes up whether business, finance or personal to keep you on track to reaching both your business and personal goals
- We can talk about business strategy, how your finances are performing, your overall wellbeing, pricing, new product/services, marketing, business operations, team, risk management, issues/challenges that you may be facing, your relationship with money, money mindset blocks etc
- End of Month Profit Date session to check in on your financial roadmap and see how you’re tracking against your financial goals
